Daily Updates

August 27, 2024 (UPDATED)

Dear Quapaw Students, Parents and Community Members,

In light of the storm damage that occurred on Friday, August 16, 2024, we wanted to make you aware of how Quapaw Public Schools has responded and plans to move forward.

As you may know, high winds ripped through the campuses last Friday which caused substantial damage to HVAC units, roofing on several buildings, fence damage, tree damage, and flooded other areas.

RELOCATION OF UPPER ELEMENTARY STUDENTS:

To begin educating our students, we have had to make some temporary arrangements. Because the upper elementary hall, classrooms, cafeteria/gymnasium, and kitchen are inoperable at this time, upper elementary students will be housed in other buildings. All 3rd grade students will be educated together in the middle school library. All 4th grade students will be educated in one classroom immediately adjacent to the high school office. All 5th grade students will be educated in the science lab next to the middle school library. Administration has worked diligently to ensure student and staff schedules are orderly for the educational process to continue as seamlessly as possible.

With the movement of the elementary students to the middle school and high school, we are ensuring schedules are arranged for elementary students not to be in the same areas at the same time as the middle school and high school students without adult supervision. Academic and bell schedules have been adjusted accordingly to ensure student groups will not overlap.

DROPOFF AND PICKUP

The school day begins at 8:00 am.  PK-2nd grade students will need to be dropped off by the front doors of the elementary school. 3rd-12th grade students will need to be dropped off between the middle school and high school. Staff will be on duty to guide students to their assigned location. 3rd-5th grade students will need to report to the high school cafeteria. 3rd-5th grade students will remain in the cafeteria until their classroom teacher escorts the class from the cafeteria.

All PK-5th grade students who do not ride the bus will need to be picked up in front of the elementary school. 3rd, 4th and 5th grades will be bussed from the middle and high school to the elementary school for parent pickup. Student pickup begins at 3:25 pm at the elementary school after the buses depart.

If your child is a bus rider, PK-2nd grade students will load buses in front of the elementary school. 3rd-12th grade students will load between the middle school and high school. 3rd-5th grade students will load the buses before the middle school and high school students are dismissed.

BREAKFAST AND LUNCH

We have also had to make changes to the eating areas. Pre-K through 2nd grade will eat breakfast in their classrooms. 3rd-12th grade students will eat breakfast in the high school cafeteria. Supervisory staff will ensure that students are seated in their designated areas for breakfast.

All elementary students will eat lunch in the high school cafeteria with their own grade level while middle school and high school students will be in class. PK-2nd will walk to the high school for lunch. PK-2nd grades will be transported to the high school by bus during impending weather and unforeseen circumstances. There will be additional supervision during the transition between buildings.

OPEN HOUSE (MEET THE TEACHER)

We will include an open house for all the buildings.  Days and times vary due to scheduled activities already on the calendar for Thursday and Friday.

Thursday, August 30: 3:00-6:00 p.m. at QES (Grades PreK-2)

Friday, August 30: 3:00-5:00 p.m. at MS/HS (Grades 3-12)

WHAT YOU CAN DO

We want to ensure that every student has the best educational experience possible. The following are recommendations:

  • Talk with your child about his/her feelings about the changes. Share your feelings as well.
  • Talk about what happened and answer any questions they may have as best as you can.
  • Reassure your child that they are safe.

We want to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students and staff. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.  The building offices are open Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  The QES Office will reopen on Wednesday, August 28.

This will be a temporary situation while building repairs are completed.

We look forward to having our students and staff return to school!

School begins on Tuesday, September 3.

Sincerely,

David Carriger, Superintendent

Sheri Compton, Elementary Principal

Aaron Thomasson, Middle School Principal

Dr. Elsie Morris, High School Principal

August 20, Tuesday

QPS Students/Parents:
We have been working non-stop since last Friday evening on the cleanup from the damage caused by the destructive storm that hit Quapaw.  We are working with cleanup and construction crews to get facilities open as fast as we can in a safe manner.
We have implemented a plan to begin school on Tuesday, September 3, for all grades.  More information will be coming.
David Carriger
Superintendent of Schools
Quapaw Public Schools

Due to the recent storm damage, we had to reschedule the Commerce and Quapaw Schools back to school bash events that were previously scheduled at each location.
Due to the damage at Quapaw Schools, we are now going to combine the Commerce and Quapaw events together and the new event location will be at the Commerce High School Fields this Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 10 AM to 2 PM.  We will have numerous bounce houses, water slides, dunk tank, snow cones, and other activities for the kids.  We will also be serving free hotdogs and hamburgers!

Student Drug Testing
Quapaw Public Schools requires that all students wishing to participate in extracurricular or co-curricular activities (Athletics, Band, Cheer, FFA, FCCLA, Academic Teams, E-Sports, etc.) complete a mandatory drug screening prior to the beginning of activities.

Cost for this screening is $10.
Students will not be permitted to participate in extracurricular or co-curricular activities until the successful completion of a drug screening. If you have any questions, please contact Jake Manning at (918) 674-2501 or by email at [email protected]
